To understand reasons for and patterns of settlement during the Colonial Period.
1 and 1/2 class periods
This lesson begins with students reading background information, including four main reasons why colonists came to America, and requires class members to do such things as answer key questions, design a merchant's advertisement persuading people to go to America and settle on its land, use a timeline, construct a bar graph, make a circle graph, use a table that organizes facts, and do map exercises.
These activities help students develop social studies skills.
After this lesson has been completed, you may want to put some students' advertisements on display.
Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
