Product Description
Colonization Simulation with sticky notes is a fun way to introduce the concept and impact of colonization in the Americas! I have been doing this simulation in some form for over ten years and finally wrote down this activity for other teachers to use. This activity has always been one of my students’ favorites, whether they were in 6th grade or 12th grade they loved it!

The Colonization Simulation activity is designed to allow student groups of four to five students to interact with their classmates to claim tables, chairs, and other objects as the teacher desires to reflect the competition of European countries during the time period of European exploration and colonization of the Americas. A group “wins” by marking the most chairs and tables with sticky notes. The start for the countries is staggered by time. Spain starts first, England starts 20 seconds later, and each additional country would be another 20 seconds or whatever the teacher desires. Seven countries are included in the simulation, but you can do the game with as few as two countries. Allow the simulation to last about 5 to 7 minutes; big classes might need less time. After the simulation, you as the teacher can ask discussion questions which are included in the simulation, or you can hand out a discussion sheet to each group or to each student as you desire. The set-up for the game will take most classes twenty to thirty minutes, you can also do the directions and set-up during one class period and the simulation and discussion in a second class period.
