This assignment can be used as a quiz, an assignment, or both (if divided). The first page is a map of colonial Africa from 1913. On this map, European colonizing countries are geographically color-coded to show who controlled which area of the continent. Students thus need to figure out which European power controlled what. The second page is an editorial cartoon of Cecil Rhodes astride Africa, an image that has come to represent the "Scramble for Africa". Students are prompted to research Rhodes as well as the symbolism in the cartoon.
