Understanding the basic use of commas helps students with reading fluency, reading comprehension, and writing fluency. This is best integrated over a 2 week period. Each day should only take approximately 15-20 minutes to introduce a rule.
This is called “Colorful Commas” because each rule was randomly assigned a color, and students were challenged to color code their commas according to their rule.
Each of the 9 rules (the first 3 rules are combined) includes a practice page to complete together, and a second page for independent practice. There are also review pages for rules 1-5, and 6-9. A final review page is included, as well as a comprehensive final assessment. ANSWER KEYS ARE INCLUDED. There are a total of 20 practice pages!!
The 9 rules, each with a sample sentence, fit perfectly on standard chart paper. There is also a copy of each of the rules and sample sentences in a miniature version that students can use to create their own page (will fit in interactive composition notebook).
