In this activity, students practice identifying key elements of fiction and nonfiction summaries. Students read 5 brief summaries, identify each as fiction or nonfiction, and color code the summaries by underlining characters, setting, problem, solution, theme, central idea, and author's purpose. This activity is especially helpful for visual learners and ELLs who need a review on summary format and the difference between fiction and nonfiction summary writing.
Accompanying Powerpoint included.
