Inspired by Pete the Cat’s “Rockin’ In My School Shoes”
, I designed this “color me” emergent reader
, which will reinforce color words
as well as the Dolch (he, she, his, her
It’s also a fun way for students to learn how to read and write their fellow classmates’ names
, as they fill in the name of one of their new friends, to complete the first sentence on each page.
Remind them to use capital letters
and end punctuation
too! (More standards practiced! Woo hoo.)
There are 2 pages on a pattern to create a “just the right size” booklet.
Children color, trace
the color words (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, white, black and gray/grey) then color the graphics accordingly.
I have my students trace and write the words with matching crayons or markers.
Besides the emergent reader booklet, I’ve also included a colorful set of pocket chart cards
For an independent center
, make an extra set, cut them in half and use as puzzles
Print the medium size set as a poster
. Hang it on the board so that students can refer to it while they’re working on their “color me” booklets
You can also make another print of this, laminate both, trim and use for a Memory Match
or “I Have; Who Has?”
Color Word Game.
I’ve also included a smaller one (3 on a page) to give to kiddos as a bookmark
to keep in their writing folders.
I’m Diane from Teach With Me, hoping your students enjoy practicing color words as they rock their school shoes.
