In looking to extend matching skills beyond just visual discrimination, I created sight word tasks that start by incorporating matching -- matching a word highlighted by color to a box in the same color -- and then as your students master that task, you can slowly replace the words framed by color to words framed by simple black print to have them get used to the idea of recognizing words and letters that form words. This is a fun game for an independent or guided literacy center. Each strip says "I see (color)." making this task just a little bit more challenging than simply matching word to picture.
