This is a great activity to introduce students to and have them practice sentence structure, word order, punctuation and vocabulary. With this set of scrambled sentences students will also have the opportunity to work with color words while building short sentences.
To begin, students choose a set of words. Each of the word sets share a common picture, making it easy for students to identify. They place the word cards onto their work surface and begin to order the words to create a meaningful sentence. Once they have created a sentence, they can then record the sentence onto a recording sheet. (two variations are provided).
This activity is a great literacy center or activity. It also works well as a pocket chart center. I have used these cards for whole group instruction and as a warm up for my guided reading groups. This activity also works well for fast finishers, as a take home activity or to include for your sub plans.
