I teach regional and state music to my 4th graders and I was looking for a way to incorporate their content from social studies into music class.
I love state emblems and as I researched the ones for Colorado, my husband who is a Colorado native chimed n "Woah, I didn't even know we had a state fossil!" I grew up knowing the emblems and symbols of New York and New Mexico where I grew up and I wanted to give that extra, and interesting knowledge to my students.
Each card includes a photo, the name o the photo (hyphenated by syllables) and a rhythm I've associated with the word. They vary from simple patterns to syncopated patterns that my students are ready for or need more work perfecting. I also use these for an activity where students begin practicing composition (the composing worksheet is available separately)
This is a pdf document and contains one set of cards that are printable and can be cut out for sorting activities. I also use these in PowerPoints as individual images to show the kids what they need to do in specific activities.
