In this lab, students will explore evidence of a chemical reaction (unexpected color change). They will create a cabbage indicator solution (from red cabbage and water) and will add powders (cream of tartar and powdered laundry detergent) to observe a color change.
Most of the materials needed for this lab can be purchased at a grocery store (or may be items you already have in your science storeroom.)
During the lab, students are instructed to make observations and record any changes. There are a few conclusion questions that ask students to list the reactants present, so some basic background knowledge in reactants and products would be helpful.
Included are some extension ideas (different substances to test with the indicator solution) and a "Try This!" idea for advanced students or students who have some extra time to explore (writing secret/hidden messages with lemon juice and the indicator solution.)
Teacher answer key and background information are included.
