Engage students in close reading, evaluating, and writing about character traits!
The three passages (similar to paired passages) guide students through "stop and think" annotations, color-coding text evidence, and completing a written response to state an opinion and give evidence from the text. The focus on one specific skill (character traits) also includes some review of general reading comprehension.
The passages in this pack all relate to friendship:
- a realistic fiction story about a student starting at a new school
- a non-fiction article about a dog who helps cheetah pups survive
- an inspiring true story about a young man's loyalty to his friend
Your students will enjoy engaging in higher-level thinking about the texts and their genres as they perform a close read. Perfect for a one-day study or using over several days!
Note: Passages are written at a grade level appropriate for about grades 4-5.
