Are you looking for ways to teach the different shades of meaning of words? This is challenging for kiddos to understand, but these fun activities will help your students expand their vocabulary and tell the difference between shades of meaning. Included in this unit are:
*Shades of Meaning Definition Poster
*Shady Sentences- This is an activity where students travel around the classroom looking for the shades of meaning pencils. Once they find a numbered pencil, they read the sentence on their recording sheet and decide which shade of meaning word makes the most sense in the sentence. After students complete the recording sheet, you can discuss student responses together as a class.
*Word Webs- Students brainstorm at least 5 synonyms for a word and then write the synonyms in order from the weakest to strongest word meaning. There are 4 different word webs included (hot, cold, happy, sad)
*Acting Out Shades of Meaning- This game is played like charades. Three students will act out different shades of meaning of a word. After the students have acted out the meaning of the words, the class will help you put them in order from weakest to strongest word meaning. There are 6 different sets of word cards included for this activity.
