The "Columbus Day Adventure" poster is designed to provide an alternative from regular class work, yet involves students with interesting mathematical challenges relating to Columbus Day.
Use the one 8.5" x 11" colored master to produce enough colored copies so that each student has a copy. It is advisable to have the copies laminated for future use
Make sure that the students are aware of the time frame that they have to complete this activity (at least 40 minutes is advised for an in class activity or overnight as a take home assignment). After the posters are handed out (one to each student), read out loud the Background and Procedure listed below.
Background: Have you ever imagined what it would be like sailing off on a yearlong adventure that would test your courage and challenge your intellectual curiosity? On their voyage to the Americas, Christopher Columbus and his crew certainly endured hardships and experiences that tested their fortitude.
Now, suppose that you lived in Palos, Spain in the late 15th century and wanted to become a crewmember during Columbus’ historic voyage to America. Because of your vast knowledge and mathematical aptitude, you are being considered for the First Mate position aboard Columbus’ flagship, the Santa Maria. However, to prove your worthiness, you have to demonstrate your superior knowledge and keen analytical abilities by completing a series of ten challenges.
Procedure: Identify the correct letter for each of the multiple-choice challenges in your quest to be selected as First Mate aboard the Santa Maria.
