Columbus English Tasks – (K-1)
This pack will enable you to gather information on what your students know about Columbus. They will form lists and use these to write and share information, culminating in a class shared book.
Word Wall - Color copy and display. As a grade brainstorm words to do with the topic and add to the correct place on the chart. Use this word bank to assist in writing tasks, recording facts, increase vocabulary and assist in spelling

Word Splashes- Around each picture record words to describe it. Discuss adjectives, verbs and nouns
Writing tasks - If I were Christopher Columbus I would… - I would like to be Christopher Columbus because……- I see a new land- The sea was rough
Read the Room - Copy the recording sheet. Display the cards numbered 1-6 and A-F. Find each card and write down what he card says in the correct space. This will give you a summary of why Christopher Columbus went on this voyage. Make sure the capitals and punctuation are in the right spot. This will help when you read it back.
Word Making - Use the names of the three ships to make as many words as you can. How many words can be made from ‘Christopher Columbus’?
Journal - As the voyage was being planned and sailed – Columbus kept a journal. Record what you think he may have written for the following events. Print off the pages and get the grade to write in pairs – sharing a page between two. When complete staple the book together and share as a class book.
