This is a very detailed historical overview of Columbus Day. It includes the historical summary of pre-1492, the economic and religious motivations for Europe to begin its Age of Exploration, a quick detail of Columbus' voyage, Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the New World, consequences of the conquest (war, religion, mistreatment of natives, slavery, disease, the food and plants of the columbian exchange between the new and old worlds), and current controversy around Columbus Day as a holiday. Last slide includes 7 review and discussion questions for either a written or class discussion.
This is a rather thorough overview in my opinion... not for people wanting a super brief overview of the holiday. It typically takes me 2 45 minute classes when reading each slide and adding in a brief description of my own. It is also self-explanatory enough to print out and give as a reading assignment.
*** Disclaimer: in the Mistreatment of the Natives slides I mention the word "rape", you may want to use this slide at your discretion for younger viewers. I thought it was important to include to give a feel for the scope of the mistreatment of the natives by the conquistadors as it was an eyewitness account by an historian. You can delete this sentence or reword if it does not fit your audience.***
