Guilty, your students will cry!
Kick off this exciting activity with a day long lesson on Mecantilism
where complicated theories are broken down and easy to follow. The researched and cited expository essay gives a brief history of the theory and explains how it impacted nations.
Also included is a prereading circle map, brainstorm, that can be added to as students read. The essay is followed with comprehension questions and answer key.
For struggling readers visual notes lay out a plan for nations who want to be powerful and rich under the mercantilism system.
Time for trial. You will divide the class into 7 groups. Some will be defendants others will be members of the court and jury. All will spend the first day of the court proceedings researching and discovering the real truth about Columbus and those first years of exploration. The second day of trial the students will start with opening statements and then begin questioning their witnesses. And man it can get dicey, especially when they start to pull out the "evidence" like diary and letters from those that were there.
The activity ends with an engaging debriefing debate and discussion questions.
