Product Description
A reproducible book including an opportunity for a written response (opinion writing), on the last page. Use this nine page book to teach your students about Christopher Columbus' famous voyage in 1492. The pages are designed in black and white so you can save your copy budget and your students can add their own color if desired.

See the text below to determine if it's an appropriate level for your students:
-Columbus thought he could find a shorter route from Spain to Asia by traveling west. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand agreed to give Columbus and his crew of ninety sailors, three ships for his journey. On August 3, 1492, Columbus set sail for Asia with three ships, the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria.
-They did not see land for many days. The sailors were scared. Many were getting sick and they were running out of supplies. The sailors wanted to return to Spain.
-Finally, they spotted land. On October 12, 1492, Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas that he named San Salvador.
-Columbus thought he had landed in India, so he called the people he met, Indians.
-Columbus continued to explore the area. He found Cuba and thought he had landed in China, and Hispaniola, which he thought was Japan.
-Columbus didn’t find Asia, but he found a new land.
He discovered America. The sailors had been told they would find riches in the new land, but they were misled.
-Columbus sailed back to Spain with gifts for Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

The last page of the book contains a written response prompt where students can state their opinion and use evidence from the text to justify their opinion.

How to prepare:
-Copy the pages (pages 3-11) on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper
-Be sure to collate the pages when copying
-For each set (pages 3-11), staple the pages on the left side (two staples for the top book and two staples for the bottom)
