Product Description
Fun Debate Activity - Students discuss whether Columbus Day should be replaced with Indigenous Peoples' Day!

This lesson provides a fun and educationally structured debate for students to discuss the controversy regarding Columbus Day. I've included two readings which provide opposing viewpoints for students to review before they debate, a graphic organizer to help them organize their ideas, an exit ticket for debate day, and a rubric tied with NYS Social Studies Practices and Common Core. This is everything you need to have your students debate an interesting issue in a fun way!

I just completed this lesson with my students this past week, and they were enthralled! They told me that they had discussions with their parents regarding this topic. At my Open House last night, I had several parents comment that their children loved the lesson!

The lesson in linked to NYS Social Studies Standards, but you could easily cut and paste in your own standards for your state.

NYS Framework Standards:
7.2a.2 - Students will examine the voyage of Columbus, leading to the Columbian Exchange.
7.2b.c - Students will examine the major reasons Native American societies declined in population and lost land to the Europeans
