Immerse yourself and your students into the world of 21st Century Learning Standards and Common Core Performance Task Standards with this unit, appropriate for the month of October for both Columbus Day and Leif Erikson Day (proclaimed 2009).
It allows students to compare and contrast, analyze, collaborate, present and critique 3 theories of the discovery of the Americas. It can stand alone with provided resources or be enriched with additional digital or text based resources. It may also be expanded by adding the newest theories of the Europeans traveling across the Land Bridge or Polynesian ship crossings.
Included in the unit:
Day 1: Columbus Video Source - Analysis and recording of facts
Day 2: Leif Erikson Video Source - Analysis and recording of facts
Day 3: Land Bridge Theory Source – Analysis and recording of facts
Day 4: Pair or small group discussion of 4 source based questions – record notes
Day 5-9: Culminating Activity (using steps of writing process)
Using notes, opinion developed, and additional resources if desired by the teacher, students will write an argumentative essay expressing their opinion on who should be credited with discovering the continent of America using the provided graphic to organize their thoughts.
Extension 2-3 days: Allow students to present their work and receive feedback from and answer questions from classmates.
