Columbus Meets the New World is an activity that is simple to describe and implement, but challenging to execute. Students are called upon to use visual clues, gestures or movements or any non-verbal communication skills to introduce themselves to a new culture. Part of this is straightforward communication, but they are also challenged to teach the native people a few of their words to aid future understanding. Some words in the activity are easier than others!
During this, learners get insight into the concepts behind the words we use and maybe into the assumptions we take for granted behind those words.
