Product Description
Christopher Columbus Writing Activities: Word Splash and RAFT (letter)

This activity is designed to be used as a homework assignment or in class assignment. It would be used after direct instruction on Christopher Columbus. Or you could have the students complete some research and then complete the assignment.

There are 2 assignments you can choose from.
1. Word Splash - Students are asked to use several of the 19 words to answer the question: Is Columbus a hero or a villain?

2. Asks students to write a letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella asking for sponsorship. It also asks students to tell how the voyage would help Spain. This is in a RAFT format: Role, Audience, Format, Topic. There are 25 words for the students to pick from to use in their RAFT (letter).

For my struggling learners, I often limit the number of words they need to use. You also could give the students the choice of assignments.

Assignment also asks students to have someone else proofread and make changes.

There is a also a rubric attached to help make grading easier.
