In the unit, students will read The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, analyzing how intersecting oppression impact the life of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old Black girl whose childhood friend was murdered by a police officer. The novel will challenge students

to consider how they can use their voices to combat all kinds of social injustices. Students will build their ability to infer and analyze text, both in discussion and through writing. Throughout the unit students will read various informational texts that carry theme of bias and oppression in the areas of race, gender, and

socioeconomic status.

Essential Questions:

What is oppression and what are the root causes?

What are the responsibilities of the individual in regard to

issues of social justice?

How can an individual use their voice to combat injustice?

Enduring Understandings:

Individuals have power to combat injustice

All oppression is connected

All social justice work must be intersectional
