Personally, I love this assignment. I've used it with advanced 9th graders and I've used it with lower-level ability 10th graders. After studying literary movements (Romanticism/Naturalism/Realism/etc.) and corresponding short stories, ask students to pick a historical event/time period and then a short story. The student must analyze the story after choosing five literary terms, such as: protagonist, theme, mood, etc. There is an additional page for an added element of having students research art and music from the time period as well, if you need to add rigor. It comes with a rubric and an example essay. I use this at the end of my short story unit after we've reviewed literary terms.
