In this lesson, students will draw integer chips to develop the rules for adding and subtracting integers. I teach addition and subtraction as one whole lesson called "combining" integers. Instead of adding or subtracting, the students are taught to circle the numbers that they are given and think of them as positives or negatives. Students then draw integer chips to discover the rules for adding and subtracting. By the end of the lesson students will discover that when you have two numbers with the same sign, you keep the sign and add the numbers. When you have two numbers with different signs, you subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the larger one.
