Spend too much time watching treasure hunters on TV and feel like heading out on your very own adventure? Then Treasure Quests are for you!!
Treasure Quest activities are great ways for students to have a great time and practice critical math skills. The best part is that they are self-checking! Students that make a mistake will quickly realize that there is a problem when they realize their answer is not one of the four answer choices, the clue is not found on the map, or the directions cause them to double back or wander completely off the map! This also encourages error analysis and the very important skill of double checking answers!
This Treasure Quest allows students to practice simplifying expressions by combining like terms including constants. This quest does not contain any negative numbers. These 10 practice problems will have your students up, thinking, and moving in no time!
Treasure Quests require VERY LITTLE prep. Simply print off an answer sheet (one side contains space for working out math problems and the other side contains the treasure map!!) for each student and one set of the cards (on paper or cardstock for more durability). Cut the cards out and laminate if you wish so they last longer. Hang them up around the room and in the hallway if you like – kids get a kick out of escaping the classroom.
Students can start at any card. Read and answer the question, working out the problem on the correct space on the answer sheet. Then examine the four answer choices for the one that matches the answer to the problem. Read the treasure hunting clue next to it in the table and, on the map side of answer sheet, record the problem number in the box to the left of the matching clue . Each clue is used only once and the clues, when all ten are followed in order, will lead you to the location of the buried treasure!!
Kids will get a kick out of using the clues to locate the treasure and won't even realize that they're also getting coordinate grid practice while they're at it!!
