The purpose of this activity is for students to analyze common errors that occur when simplifying algebraic expressions. By identifying the errors on their own, students are more likely to avoid such errors in their own math work.
This activity includes 5 algebraic expressions, all of which have been simplified incorrectly. Students are to correctly simplify the expression, identify the error and explain the rule that needs to be remembered to avoid the mistake in the future. This activity can be done individually, in groups or as a jig saw activity.
The work space is formatted so that students have space to complete each step of the process. Answers are included.
