Help your students review sentence structures and improve their sentence fluency by combining sentences in this engaging back to school game! All that you will need is the ability to project a power point presentation, a ball (soft texture), some dark tape, and a trash can. Beginning with a brief review of clauses and sentence structures, the game includes three rounds. In the first round, students write compound sentences. In round two, they write complex sentences, and finally, in round three they write compound-complex sentences.
Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this game motivates them with their love of sports. When you put your students in heterogeneous groups for a game with friendly competition, it is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success. As an added bonus, the sentences give study tips for success in school.
This activity makes excellent guided practice after instruction for combining sentences. Then follow the game with independent practice. Instructions for both students and the teacher are included, along with a key.
