An attention-grabbing demonstration on the topic of combustion where bubbles of pure oxygen are produced using grocery store materials. You will light a small wooden stirrer and then blow the flame out, but then re-ignite the flame by simply moving the stick into one of the bubbles! All the science behind the effect is described.
There is also an extension described where two graduated cylinders are used to supply oxygen and carbon dioxide. The flame can be extinguished in one, and re-ignited in the other!
Afterwards students can make their own fire triangles which look great on a bulletin board. A template for the triangles is provided.
