This activity involves analyzing informational text to determine the truths, myths, and misunderstandings about comets, asteroids and meteoroids.
Give your students the Anticipation Guide, which contains twenty statements regarding the small bodies of our solar system: comets, asteroids and meteoroids. Students circle "Agree" or "Disagree" for each statement BEFORE they read the text.
For my classes, I made enough copies of the reading so that students could work in partners to read it. Instruct the students to determine if their answers to the statements on the Anticipation Guide were correct or not as they read through the text, and have them circle whether they agree or disagree in the column titled AFTER reading on the Anticipation Guide. To hold the students accountable for where/how they made their decision about the truth of each of the facts, they also must write a PROOF statement in a complete sentence stating the fact and page number where the fact can be found.
The informational reading discusses the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud, the parts of a comet and famous comets, the composition of the Asteroid Belt, some famous asteroids, the difference between meteors and meteorites, what is a meteor shower, and more.
Also included in this product is a graphic organizer of the 3 small bodies to help students review the information.
