I love to teach things to kids using concepts they can easily relate to in the real world. Rounding to the nearest 10's, 100's or 1000's is difficult for students who don't understand place value very well. With this activity, I use the idea of a car going up a mountain and running out of gas to get the point across. Actually allowing the students to pretend they are in the car makes this even more enjoyable. If the car runs out of gas BEFORE the mountain peak, it rolls back down to the bottom of the mountain. If it runs out of gas AFTER the mountain peak, it rolls forward to the next mountain base. (next 10, 100, or 1,000) You get the idea.....Hopefully Coming Round the Mountain will make rounding an exciting activity for you and your students!
