As movie posters entice us to see soon-to-be-released shows, this bulletin board idea captures the interest of readers by displaying books that are "coming soon" and "recently released." There is no arguing that students are drawn to new titles. Hooking these readers is often the first step to developing that love for reading. Students need desire to build a reading habit. By displaying pictures of these new titles and the ones about to be published, they are influenced into that “wanting.”
I remove the staples on each book’s release date and give a booktalk during class. I usually use the description I find on bookseller’s websites to get them interested or I discuss the particular author who wrote it. The cover then gets shifted to the “Now Showing” side of the display as I hand out the cover I replaced the new cover with as a book mark to any student who wants it.
The other true genius to this idea is that you’ll never have to replace the entire bulletin board again. Once made with film strip boarder and red cloth stapled at the top like curtains, I only have to staple up new covers every so often as space on the board comes available.
I specifically choose book titles that I know will capture my 7th grader’s interest or books from authors that I have come to know and enjoy through my seventeen years as a middle school reading teacher. I’ll seasonally update this file to include new titles about to be released. Simply come back to my teacherspayteachers page to see if I’ve uploaded a new list of titles for you to download. I will always upload the list by the season (Fall, Winter, Spring) titles and year published so you can know if the books are new. I’ve only placed the price of this download at $1 so you can cheaply purchase, if you choose, the new list of books about to be published several times a year to continue updating your bulletin board. The hard work will be done for you as I collect the titles, release dates, and do all the research.
Because of copyright, I cannot supply the actual covers. I will supply a researched list, but you’ll need to acquire the digital graphic by copying and pasting from a bookseller’s website. I have supplied a template that you can save and continue to update with the new titles before printing.
