I have provided 4 different forms of the Dualistic Themes in a Coming of Age Story Graphic Organizer. These graphic organizers are perfect prewriting tools for any Coming of Age Thematic Unit in Literature. They are perfect for addressing Common Core shifts and in helping teachers create lesson plans for a strong curriculum and more rigorous classroom instruction. Analyzing excerpts from any given text literary text will definitely be made easier. Please use whichever form you or your students are more comfortable with. The varying lengths of the analysis response space will also allow you to differentiate your instruction. This graphic organizer should be used only after students have been immersed in Coming of Age as a Literary Genre or Universal Theme (see free downloadable content “Coming of Age Literary/Literature Resources”). Lastly, using Sandra Cisneros’ novella The House on Mango Street as the driving text, I have provided a sample of what the complete graphic organizer should resemble.

Reading:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.3 Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

Writing:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.1 Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
