Background on Strategy and Book:
Vocabulary Role Play has the students actively involved in their vocabulary development. By acting out words and situations, the students will have more opportunity to internalize the vocabulary and understand the text. The book, Coming to America: The Story of Immigration, by Betsy Maestro, is a nonfiction text that focuses on immigration (how people came from other lands to live in the United States of America. As the teacher reads this book aloud, he/she will stop at the key vocabulary and discuss and act out the word. After each word is acted out, the word placed in a pocket chart or tacked to board. After first reading of the text, the teacher will point to, and review each word. Then the teacher will allow students to group and practice role play with vocabulary words. You may wonder how to act out these words? This does not have to be elaborate; the goal is that students are physically involved in the lesson. I will include example role play ideas; you may wish to come up with additional role play ideas for your classroom. Have fun!
Note: My computer was acting up, all of the vocabulary cards should print out fine, there are some extra blank cards for the teacher to use, some are messed up, but it should still give you extra blank vocabulary card.
