As a 4th grade teacher, I needed something to help my students remember the basic comma rules. And, I needed it quickly as the STAAR revising and editing practices have some tough comma errors that the students needed to recognize.
So, I stretched the limits of my imagination and came up with a mnemonic device for the letters in the word "commas"!
C - clauses
O - openings
M - metropolitan areas (city, state)
M - months (dates)
A - asides
S - series
My students now shout out the comma rule when I call out a letter, but better yet, they take joy in finding out how comma knowledge empowers them as writers. Plus, we are finding those revision and editing practices not so scary!
I have the posters in bright colors and also black line (grayscale).
I hope they make commas as little easier to conquer!
