My name is Elaine Shindelar. This is a lesson that I used with second graders to introduce commas. It involves the use of the book When Comma Came to Town from the Grammar Tales punctuation books. Those are great books if you don't own them yet, and I'm sure that someone at your school has them that you can borrow. The library might even be able to order them! The lesson includes Virginia Standards of Learning as the objectives but can be changed easily to match your own state standards. There is an activity attached to the end of the lesson plan that asks the students to use pictures to write listing sentences with commas. You can use any pictures you may have, or you could write or post items on the board for all students to use. This lesson really kept the kids' attention and helped them have a painless introduction to commas!
