After evaluating my freshmen for comma usage in writing, I discovered deficiencies. I tried a few workbook pages, but I did not see much improvement. I retaught the concepts, added my own test practice worksheet, and administered a test (larger version of the practice). Success! The overall average of my students' scores on this test was 94 percent! One hundred ten students took the test. The improvement in comma usage in their writing has been evident.
The practice (8 questions) and test (15 questions) involve using commas and coordinating conjunctions; semi colons; and separate sentences. Students must write the answers instead of simply adding punctuation where needed. I saw much improvement when I made them write their answers.
