Commas, Comma, Commas! It seems that commas are some of the most misused punctuation marks ever. Getting your students to fully understand how to use commas can be difficult and frustrating. Don’t despair. This is a fun, fast paced way to check your students understanding of comma usage. The great thing about this game is that no only will your students learn how to correctly use commas, but they will also learn some interesting facts about the state of Mississippi.
There are 24 cards. The first 12 task cards provide students with sentences that contain commas. Some of them correctly use commas. Some of them do not. Your students are asked to determine which are correct and which are incorrect. The last 12 cards contain sentences that correctly used commas. They ask students to analyze why the commas were placed where they were.
I recommend printing these cards off on cardstock and laminating them. Then, provide students with an answer key sheet. This way they can be used over and over again.
All you have to do is set a time for 40 to 60 seconds. Place at card at a different spot in your room. Place one student at each card and start the timer. Once the timer goes off the students will rotate from their original station and move the next card. You continue this until each student has answered all the cards.
So, let the learning begin.
