Four years ago, I was shocked to learn that my Firsties (first graders) had to know how to separate single words in a series. This year, my first year teaching 6th grade ELA, I have been shocked to learn that my middle schoolers are still challenged by using commas in a series! The acronym S.L.I.D.E. has been most helpful to my students. When I ask, “Why do you need a comma there?”, most of my students reply with, “Because of the ‘S’ in S.L.I.D.E.!”
