The most difficult part of the argumentative essay is the commentary (a.k.a. explanation or analysis). This is the part of the essay that requires the critical thinking, and students struggle with what to say when it comes to analyzing literature. Students also often confuse plot summary and analysis/ commentary, so this handout gives an example of plot summary vs. analysis using Beowulf. Following the example is a list of literary elements and techniques that students can use as a means of explaining their textual evidence. The elements and techniques are followed by questions to guide students' analysis.
Overall, this is an excellent tool for students to use throughout the writing process, and it can definitely help students push their analysis to a deeper level.
