"Finding Your Way" is a second grade Common Core transdisciplinary lesson which incorporates using a number line, skip counting patterns, locations on a simple map, and cardinal directions.
STUDENT DIRECTIONS FOR ACTIVITY:
Tommy is navigating through Teeny Tiny Town. He left school and traveled 6 units north to Tina’s house to play with tiny toys. When Tommy finishes playing, he needs to stop by the grocery store to buy Tater-Tots for dinner. Then, Tommy needs to go to his house on Turtle Terrace. Help Tommy find his way to the store, and then home for dinner.
1. Create the south-north number line, and the west-east number line.
Be sure you start with the given zero for both lines!
Each number line will end at 20 units.
2. Draw the path Tommy will take to get to each destination.
3. Include the plotted points on the map of Teeny Tiny Town on Tommy’s route.
4. Summarize Tommy’s journey by including units traveled and cardinal directions.
Grade Level: 2
Topic: Operations and Algebraic Thinking- Numeric and Graphic Representations of Relationships
COMMON CORE STATE STANDARD:
2.OA.1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
CCSS Mathematical Practices:
x 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
x 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
x 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
x 4. Model with mathematics.
x 5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
x 6. Attend to precision.
x 7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
