The ability to examine words and use prefixes, suffixes, and roots to determine pronunciation and word meaning is a skill students need to develop. To do this, students need practice. Utilize these materials with students to provide opportunities to practice student dissection of words as well as to allow them to see how word parts affect meaning.
With this you will receive a graphic organizer where students will dissect words into word parts. It will help them understand that knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and roots increases their ability to read text and comprehend. With this you will also receive, a third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade leveled lists of common prefixes, suffixes, and roots. If that wasn't enough, I have also included, the most common lists of prefixes and suffixes used in the English language for more advanced students. For the teacher, I have made sure to provide a set of flashcards with example words. Use these for a game or during small group time when you need to provide students with extra practice.
