This is a Common Core aligned research activity on the National Parks in the United States. It is meant to accompany the story, Animals Come Home to Our National Parks, but it could be used independently. It was written with 4th grade in mind, but could be used in 5th as well.
Students will explore the National Park Service's kids' site Webrangers. There they will investigate the symbols on the NPS Arrowhead symbol and complete activities related to different aspects of the national park, such as science, nature, animals, and parks. They will also perform a close read on an article about John Muir. In groups or teams they will research a particular park, plan and create a poster about the park, and present their poster to their classmates. Students will also complete a response booklet to the poster presentations. An assessment and survey are included for students to demonstrate their specific knowledge after the group work and to rate their product.
