PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a Common Core aligned research activity on astronauts and the Space Shuttle. It is meant to accompany the story, Astronaut and the Onion, but could be used independently.

Students will explore the Greek roots: astro and naut. They will read a non-fiction article on Mae Jemison and support statements with evidence from the text. They will also visit NASA's website and look at astronaut biographies. They will work together to compile lists of experiences and qualifications astronauts should have. Students will also view a video on the history of the Space Shuttle and construct a main idea and list supporting details. Last, students will complete an organizer pulling together all of their learning on astronauts. Also, included are masters to make a simple astronaut peek over craft for display.
