Teach addition and subtraction word problems with this perfectly scaffolded kit!
First teach students key words using provided blank OR completed anchor charts! This kit also includes smaller versions of these for students to glue into their math journals. Again, there is a blank template for students to fill in the key words AND a completed template if you'd rather keep their journals nice and neat!
Next, there is a word problem math game with 6 adding and subtracting word problem task cards and 6 correlating picture cards. With the provided worksheets, students are asked to match each word problem to the correct picture card AND write an equation for each. This can be done as a center or small group.
Finally, there are 4 other pages with two word problems on each page. On these activity sheets, students are asked to read the word problem, draw it out, and write a number sentence with a solution. These could be used as challenge activity, extra seat work, homework or small group practice.
This is perfect for teachers to see how well students are comprehending the unit, because the kit provides you with activities for all levels of Marzano's scale 0-4.
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1
CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
