This research is unit is perfect for the month of October. Students will be using books and internet websites to uncover information about bats.
Students will need to be shown how to access the allowed websites. (If you have a web page of your own, you can upload the link to your web page. Students can navigate to your site and click on the link). Using pages 1 and 2 of the student packet, students need to navigate the web site to find facts about a bat’s diet, appearance, and habitat. There is space for the student to write two of his/her favorite interesting facts.
Students will need assistance being shown how to find the author/web-master, article title, and URL.
Either individually or with partners (depending on how many books you have), students will use one book to find bat facts (student page 3).
Students will use the paragraph planner to plan out their topic sentence and 4 details from their research (student pages 4-5).
Students will then write a rough draft of their paper. Editing marks are included on the rough draft paper to either self-edit, or edit with a partner (student pages 6-7).
Students can use a computer to type their final paper, or formal writing paper can be provided to students.
The math picture graph can be used as a fun extension activity of the theme. Prior to completing the graph, teacher will have needed to help students compile data of favorite Halloween characters. Students will cut and paste bats into the picture graph to fulfill the class data.
Use the optional rubric to assign your own point values for assessed tasks.
