PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

For hundreds of years London was known as the home of the “pea soup fog.” What many do not know is that this “fog” was quite often not a natural event, but rather a thick and toxic man-made mixture of sulfur dioxide caused by the burning of coal in homes and industry. In 1952 an environmental disaster now known as the “Great Smog” killed between 4,000 and 12,000 Londoners in span of only a few days. This is the story of the mysterious “fog” that struck London in that fateful month of December, 1952, the aftermath of the tragedy, and the reasons why this no longer happens today. This passage and assessment can be used in Grades 5-9 depending on your students' ability levels and in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, teacher-directed study in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, etc). This is a high-interest article designed for use with reluctant readers or in any regular classroom! Please download the Preview to see part of the text and ALL the questions included in the printable.

This passage and assessment is ideal as part of a close reading program in your classroom based around mastery of the Common Core Informational Text Standards! What does that mean to you as a classroom teacher? It means that this is not the typical “one reading I'm done” comprehension work often given before the Common Core Standards were created. To complete the assessment for the passage, students will need "to undertake the close, attentive reading and re-reading that is at the heart of understanding and enjoying complex and worthy works.”

The “no prep” printable includes:

1) An engaging, high-interest informational text of 1000 words called “London’s Killer Fog.” Flesch Kincaid Reading Level = 7.5

2) A set of 28 questions, from simple to more challenging, written to align with these Common Core Informational Text Standards:RI.4.5, RI.5.1, RI.5.4, RI.6.3, RI.6.5

3) Answers to every question.
