For hundreds of years London was known as the home of the “pea soup fog.” What many do not know is that this “fog” was quite often not a natural event, but rather a thick and toxic man-made mixture of sulfur dioxide caused by the burning of coal in homes and industry. In 1952 an environmental disaster now known as the “Great Smog” killed between 4,000 and 12,000 Londoners in span of only a few days. This is the story of the mysterious “fog” that struck London in that fateful month of December, 1952, the aftermath of the tragedy, and the reasons why this no longer happens today.
