I created this project for a Modern Immigration and Memoir Unit that I am developing for my 8th grade ESL Literacy students. As the project is fully Common Core aligned, this task is appropriate and challenging for the mainstream classroom, as well.
As our unit focuses on modern immigration and memoir, specifically the memoir of an Afghan girl, I began the unit discussing human rights and reading several articles about life during the Taliban regime. These articles were extremely easy to find using a research database (accessed for free via the public library) and directly downloaded in PDF from Junior Scholastic and NY Times Upfront. You can tailor this project however you see fit--perhaps you are discussing migration and would like the children to interview a settler. All you have to do is slightly change the writing situation and task, and input your information about the settler project--but the format and specifics stay the same--because it's Common Core aligned!
This download includes a detailed and scaffolded criteria for success and complete rubric aligned to the Common Core State Standards-Narrative Writing.
