The ability to engage in text-based discussion with peers in humanities subjects such as history and English is a skill that is central to the Common Core State Standards.
To help students acquire this skill, this packet contains a series of discussion prompts to be used by students to structure their discourse while engaging in text-based conversations. Introducing these prompts into a discussion pushes students to carefully listen to one another, and ensures that they are supporting their arguments with textual evidence.
Included in are prompts for supporting other students’ remarks, challenging other students’ remarks, introducing a new idea into the discussion, and asking for clarification of a remark. Lastly, additional prompts are included to help students summarize the day’s learning.
It is recommended that students that are less experienced in text-based discussion be pushed to use the prompts almost verbatim, while more experienced students be given the freedom to structure their own responses while adhering to the spirit of the discussion prompts.
