Common Core Aligned!
This packet include offers over 20 weeks of math number stories for students to solve…that’s over 100 number stories! Number stories are prepared to address the Common Core Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1, CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.B.4, CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.5, CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.D.8. Number stories get progressively challenging as the year goes on, building upon standard curriculum scope and sequence. Students show their understanding by drawing to solve as well as writing appropriate number models/ number sentences.
Guidelines for weekly use…
On Mondays (or first day in 5-day cycle), present students with Weekly Number Story Journal cover page. Guide students to fill in name on “front” cover and the relevant dates on “back” cover. (NOTE: The cover will be folded to hold the five number story pages.)
Once students have personalized the cover page, distribute page one of the Weekly Number Story Journal for completion. Collect student work (or have students maintain their own work in a safe place).
On Tuesday (2nd day), Wednesday (3rd day), Thursday (4th day), Friday (5th day), distribute one number story page for completion. Again, you may have students keep their work until final journal assembly on Friday (5th day) or collect each day and pass back on Friday (5th day). (At the beginning of the year, it may be easier to collect the work daily until students become more responsible!)
On Friday (or the 5th day in 5-day cycle), once the final number story is completed, students will assemble their Weekly Number Story Journal by folding pages to make a book. NOTE: Cover page folds on the gray line. Interior pages fold right down the middle.
Assessing student learning can take place daily or you may choose to wait until the Weekly Number Story Journal is assembled.
Guidelines for Center use…
Another option for use…Assemble Weekly Number Story Journals and have them in a math center. During center time, students can work on journals, using manipulatives to assist them as they draw and solve and construct relevant number models/ number sentences.
