Product Description
Your students will have the opportunity to engage in a fun and interesting research project about animals that are considered to be keystone species and how they directly influence their ecosystems. A keystone species is an animal that has a deep impact on an ecosystem. If a keystone species goes extinct, it would cause several other species in that ecosystem to also become extinct because of their dependence on the keystone species. This project gives children the important experience of reading informational texts, compiling facts about a topic from more than one source of information, synthesizing prior knowledge and new learning on a particular topic, and presenting research findings in the form of an informational text that the students, themselves, will be authoring. Furthermore, the project supports knowledge of text structure and nonfiction text features as students create their nonfiction informational text.

Any research project can easily be differentiated by assigning students at various levels different texts to read, providing varying levels of support, and altering the expectations for the final product. This project was written for students in third and fourth grade, but could easily be used with other grade levels.
